Title : Application of Guided Implant Surgery Principles to Tooth Autotransplantation
Abstract :
- Background: Guided surgery has transformed implant dentistry by improving surgical accuracy, reducing operative risks, and optimizing functional and aesthetic outcomes. These principles can also be translated to other oral surgical procedures, including tooth autotransplantation, where precision and time management are critical.
- Case Presentation: This lecture will illustrate the application of guided implant surgery protocols in the context of a tooth autotransplantation. A clinical case involving an impacted maxillary canine (tooth 23) will be presented. Orthodontic traction was deemed risky due to the position of the tooth, leading to the decision to perform an autotransplantation. By adopting a guided surgical protocol, the surgical phase was simplified, the extra-oral time of the transplant minimized, positioning accuracy improved, and anatomical obstacles effectively avoided.
- Discussion: The surgical workflow was largely inspired by well-established implant guided surgery protocols, highlighting the versatility of existing guided surgery kits beyond implant placement. This case underscores the potential of guided protocols to enhance surgical outcomes in autotransplantation, a technique that offers unique therapeutic opportunities, especially in young patients.
- Conclusion: Guided surgery principles should no longer be confined to implantology. Their integration into autotransplantation opens new perspectives, improving predictability and reinforcing the role of digital workflows in modern oral surgery.
